The list of tobacco seeds we have suitable for snuff is listed on the left.
Snuff tobacco is normally cured using the air or fire-curing methods.
Air-cured tobacco is sheltered from wind and sun in a well-ventilated chamber, where it air-dries for six to eight weeks. Air-cured tobacco is low in sugar, which gives the tobacco smoke a light, sweet flavor, and high in nicotine. Cigar and burley tobaccos are air cured.
In fire curing, smoke from a low-burning fire on the barn floor permeates the leaves. This gives the leaves a distinctive smokey aroma and flavour. Fire curing takes three to ten weeks and produces a tobacco low in sugar and high in nicotine. Pipe tobacco, chewing tobacco, and snuff are usually fire cured.
HOW TO MAKE YOUR OWN SNUFF
It is very easy to make your own snuff. All you need is a snuff grinder.
Crush the ready dried and cured tobacco into small pieces, removing any hard or woody bits. Place a tiny about of tobacco into the snuff grinder and give the handle a few turns.
The finely grinded tobacco snuff will fall through the fine sieve and accumulate in the chamber below.
If you want to alter the smell of the snuff, simply place it in close proximity to anything you would like the tobacco to capture the smell of, eg. mint, parsley etc.
There are other ways of enhancing the smell and flavour using other additives, but as we don't like that word on this site, we will say no more on that subject.
